Dr. Rabheru is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in geriatric psychiatry. He is a Full Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, and a Geriatric Psychiatrist at the Ottawa Hospital where he serves as the Medical Director of both the Geriatric Psychiatry and ECT Services. He is Past President of the Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry (CAGP), and has been designated as a Founder of the subspecialty of Geriatric Psychiatry by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in October 2011. Dr. Rabheru received the 2012 CAGP Award for Outstanding Achievements for Geriatric Psychiatry in Canada.
He has published many peer-reviewed papers and is the co-author of Treating Dementia: Cognition & Beyond, and Dysfunctional Behavior in Dementia: A Clinician's Guide. He is currently an active participant on various scientific and academic advisory boards, serves as a referee for several scientific journals, and regularly participates at national and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Rabheru has a special interest in developing education programs for physicians andother caregivers. He is recognized internationally as an expert in ECT, for his scholasticcontributions to the development and teaching of a renowned national ECT course, andthe pioneering use of simulation to teach ECT administration. He also has special interestand expertise in the Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), hascreated an innovative clinical tool to assess BPSD, and plays a key role in the planning ofnew strategies for health care delivery to the growing population of elderly patients.
